It is merely for the finish so it begins to falter, nevertheless slap-up finale rescues it throughout the ‘red’. Wonderfully staged and wisely dialogued, it has zero higher difficulties inside the living down the incredibly unappealing identity.” [ 8 ]
Month-to-month Motion picture Bulletin told you “The film moves within a fast pace, the latest discussion are smooth and you can characterisations basically active. Cock Powell and you can Evelyn Keyes direct the fresh throw professionally, as investigator are enjoyed significant aplomb because of the that individual identity, Lee J. Cobb.” [ 9 ]
Richard Brody on the The Yorker detailed “Which terse and you may taut film noir is actually considering the fresh new personal and you can elite group disputes of label reputation, this new criminal mastermind (starred because of the Knob Powell) at the rear of a snazzy illegal local casino. The latest film’s copywriter and you will manager, Robert Rossen, creates a good multidimensional chess online game, for mortal limits, ranging from Johnny, his company (Thomas Gomez), their boss’s wife (Ellen Received), a great cagey police inspector (Lee J. Cobb), and you can an effective scuffling actress (Evelyn Keyes) whose aunt (Nina Foch) did at the gambling enterprise and you will old a corrupt investigator (Jim Bannon). The new caustically epigrammatic program, the new cast’s suavely regulated body language regarding love and you can threat, and Rossen’s thrillingly restrained and smartly cocky photographs (including his political conscience) get this to pugnacious yet , detail by detail spectacle a low profile classic of genre.” [ 10 ]

Photo enjoys action and suspense, and you may particular small touches out-of humor to include flavor. Expert activities of the Penis Powell, because a gambling family overseer, and you may Lee J. Cobb, because the an authorities inspector, including up the get . Although the patch employs a familiar pattern, the newest characterizations is new plus the performances sufficient so you can overbalance. Dialog is actually terse and you may relevant, steering clear of the psychological, phoney touch. Strange cam basics come-along on occasion in order to escalate attention and you can temporarily stop the eye. Good teamplay by Robert Rossen, doubling as director-scripter, and Milton Holmes, totally new blogger and you can associate music producer, also supports rendering it a soft creation.” [ 11 ]

It is generally a matter of seeing Mr. Powell go through his paces stylishly when you find yourself a huge shed from stars and you can actresses provide him standard support. Evelyn Keyes plays the great nothing lady which brings forth the newest finest in your and you may Ellen Drew is the easy and you may slinky vixen exactly who gets him into the jams. Thomas Gomez are fatty because villain and you will Lee J. Cobb do a different sort of ready journey just like the a tired cops inspector whom ultimately closes happening. Many taking and you can smoking is done because of the all of the concerned.” [ a dozen ]
